Somewhere along the way, he built one.
During the Vietnam War, Arthur wasn’t flying combat missions. He was the mechanic pilots counted on to get them back into the air. Give Arthur a damaged fighter and a seemingly impossible deadline, and he’d find a way to make it fly again.
After the war, he opened a small mechanic shop and junkyard where he fixed just about anything people could drag, drive or tow through the gate.
But the junkyard became something else, too.
Old friends started showing up. They stayed. They argued. They laughed. They remembered.
And Arthur always seemed to have room for one more.
Then five kids discovered the place.
At first, they’re simply unexpected visitors asking a lot of questions.
Before long, they’re underfoot, getting involved, learning about airplanes, making friends with Arthur’s ragtag collection of veterans—and becoming part of a world none of them knew existed.
Arthur doesn’t set out to become anyone’s mentor.
He certainly doesn’t expect to become part of another family.
But Arthur has spent his life fixing things. It turns out airplanes and engines aren’t the only things that can be put back together.
